New research aims to measure patients’ breathing discomfort
A US$3.5 million grant will support UC Riverside work on detecting shortness of breath, including in people who cannot easily describe it.

The five-year project, announced on 16 September, will combine physiological measurements with machine learning. Researchers plan to test how well their approach works in people with different lung conditions and in intensive care. A clinically validated monitoring tool remains a goal of the work.
